What is Cupping

Cupping  is a time honored practice used in Chinese Medicine and other cultures that involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create suction. This gentle negative pressure helps to decompress underlying tissue, stimulate blood flow, release muscle tension, and activate the lymphatic system.

This technique has been used for centuries to improve circulation, relieve pain, and promote overall well-being.

At my practice, I use Cupping to promote relaxation, enhance circulation, relieve pain, remove “heat,” and pull toxins from your body’s tissue.

What to Expect

Cupping generally feels good and relaxing for aching muscles. You usually feel a tight sensation in the area of the cup, but it isn’t unpleasant. Cups can be left in place or moved around during a 5-20 minutes treatment. The procedure causes the skin to temporarily turn red, blue or purple, especially if there is a blockage under the cups. The skin discoloration may last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks and fades naturally.

Cupping often gets great results for patients with many types of pain, including back and muscle pain. It is also useful for treating the flu, colds, red itchy skin conditions, allergies, fevers, aches and soreness. Plus, many people find it stress relieving.

In my practice, I often combine acupuncture and cupping in one session, but I also offer shorter appointments, 20- 30 minutes, for just cupping, depending on your needs.

There are a few contraindications with cupping. It is not appropriate for everyone. Some contraindications include cupping over damaged skin or a rash, and during pregnancy, cupping is not appropriate on certain parts of the body.

Cupping Benefits

Back

Reduces Pain and Muscle Tension

Cupping is exceptionally effective for alleviating chronic pain and tight muscles. The suction draws blood flow to the affected area, nourishing tissues and relaxing knots. This helps release trigger points and can provide significant relief for conditions such as back pain, stiff neck and shoulders, and sciatica, restoring comfort and improving your range of motion.

Lungs

Supports Respiratory Health

For issues like the common cold, allergies, or asthma, cupping can be a powerful ally. It helps break up phlegm and congestion in the lungs. This action can open airways, relieve coughing, and help your body expel pathogens more effectively for a speedier recovery.

Veins

Promotes Healthy Circulation

The negative pressure from cupping powerfully stimulates circulation and helps clear stagnation of blood and fluids. By drawing new blood to targeted areas, it delivers oxygen and essential nutrients while helping the body to clear metabolic waste. This revitalized flow supports cellular repair and overall systemic health, leaving you feeling refreshed.

Nervous System

Calms the Nervous System

While addressing physical ailments, cupping also has a profound calming effect on the nervous system. The therapy helps shift the body into a parasympathetic “rest and digest” state. This process can significantly reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and leave you with a lasting sense of tranquility and deep relaxation.
