Happy Valentine’s Day!

Did you know that approximately 2300 years ago, Plato was the first to write about intimate relationships. His essay told the story of a mythical beast who was split in half by Zeus and rearranged. This forced the beasts to embrace each other in order to have sexual relations. It gives rise to the idea that the need for love comes from the longing to be reunited with one’s long lost other half. The reunion of the two halves reconnects the ancient unity destroyed by Zeus. I wonder if the sayings, “my better half” or “my other half” comes from this myth.

I do not believe that people are incomplete when they are alone, but this story certainly speaks to the human need to be accepted, appreciated, understood, and loved.
