With Thanksgiving only a few days away, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the wisdom from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern research that relates to gratitude. Both scientists and TCM practitioners/acupuncturists, in their own way, believe that gratitude is good for the Heart.
The Heart in TCM:
In TCM, the Heart is “The “Emperor” of All Organs. It governs blood circulation as well as our emotional and spiritual well-being. The Heart houses the shen (our mind and spirit) which has a huge impact on our ability to experience joy, connect with others, and find meaning in our lives. Unsurprisingly, the heart’s element is Fire, its color is red, and joy is its associated emotion. Traditional Chinese medicine says joy and gratitude nourish the Heart. Scientists agree. Research has shown that sustained feelings of gratitude can offer a multitude of benefits for the heart.
Health benefits of gratitude:
• Lower stress levels,
• Improved blood pressure,
• Reduced inflammation,
• A Boost of dopamine and serotonin (“feel-good” hormones),
• Improved sleep quality,
• Enhanced immunity,
• And even healthier blood vessels and heart rhythms.
This Thanksgiving, consider implementing a simple gratitude practice. For example, write a list of things, people, or moments you’re thankful for. At the Thanksgiving table, you might all speak to the people or things for which you are grateful. Or, when you have a moment, consider sending quick notes to the important people in your life. Small moments of thankfulness support the Heart, nourish your spirit, and help you feel more connected to the people around you.
As your acupuncturist, I know that gratitude works both ways. I am deeply thankful for each of you who have entrusted me with your care. I am also grateful for the many of you who have shown me kindness and made me laugh. Thank you so much!
May your holiday season be filled with joy, gratitude, and a well nourished heart.
